Revolutionising the most trusted point cloud registration platform

BK: Welcome to HxGN RADIO. My name is Brian, thanks for joining us today.

Leica Cyclone offers smarter registration, visualisation, collaboration and integration. Leica Geosystems is proud to offer two new additions to the Cyclone product family that are revolutionising the most trusted point cloud registration platform. Joining me today is Justin Barton, the laser scanning HDS product marketing specialist at Leica Geosystems, and today we will be discussing a smarter way to capture and register reality with the new Leica Cyclone software. Thanks for joining me, Justin.

JB: Oh, my pleasure. Thank you for having me.

BK: Yeah, I appreciate it. So, tell us about Leica Cyclone.

JB: Well, so Leica Cyclone is really the core family of products that we have at Leica Geosystems for processing point clouds and laser scan data, and it has been trusted for over a decade in all of our industry segments. So in public safety, in plant, in AEC and BIM, it is really one of the core products there. What we’ve done recently is bring about some new additions to it, as you mentioned. So we’re really trying to modernise and streamline some of the availability and functionality that we have for our customers within this product basket.

BK: Excellent. All right, so what are some of the new additions?

JB: Right. So I think first and foremost, we’ve added a product called Cyclone REGISTER 360. And really, the idea with Cyclone REGISTER 360 is that some of our customers have an abundance of data, which can sometimes be a little cumbersome, and we really feel that it shouldn’t be. So what we really wanted to do was tackle this and focus on three paramount tenets for the software, which were speed, scale and simplicity. And so the idea with REGISTER 360 is that we really redesigned and built from the ground up a new product that will address those.

The second one that I want to talk about is Cyclone Cloud. As the name would suggest, it is basically a new cloud solution. It is actually our first venture into cloud services, or software as a service. Cyclone Cloud is actually a sort of management portal that will be used to manage various subscription services. The first of which we are adding is TruView Cloud, which is a cloud-based version of our popular TruView products. It will be a management portal there to host a whole new suite of solutions as we build out that offering there.

BK: Nice. So how is the user experience of Leica Cyclone different from previous-generation products, and what are some of the new key features that were added?

JB: Right. Cyclone REGISTER 360 really is a different product from past generations of Cyclone and other products on the market. I feel that longtime users will definitely find it familiar. It’s a registration software. This is something that they do every day in this type of industry, so they’ll definitely understand the basic tenets of it. But at the same time, as I mentioned, we really tried to focus on improving the speed, scale and simplicity of the product. By doing that from the ground up, REGISTER 360, they’ll find is either a great complement to their existing workflow—so, those longtime users, heavy users, it’ll be a good complement to all the other Cyclone modules that they use for very specialised types of data processing—but also, we’re really trying to reach out to some of the new users with LiDAR technology, reality capture technology really becoming ubiquitous over the last few years. There’s such a growth there, especially with the introduction of tools like the Leica BLK 360 scanner, one-button press and you’re off scanning. The REGISTER 360 will provide a much lower barrier entry point for these new users as well because it has a much more streamlined, simplified user workflow. So there won’t be that large expert knowledge that is required to be able to still produce professional-quality deliverables.

BK: That’s good. That’s always a good thing.

JB: Yes.

BK: How is REGISTER 360, in cloud services, setting new standards for speed, automation, ease of use, that kind of stuff?

JB: As I mentioned, we’re really on a mission to try and democratise access to all this information that’s being collected. The data is so powerful, but it’s not easy to necessarily get the information out. So with REGISTER 360, what we’ve done is really, first and foremost, address speed. And we’ve made huge improvements over all the import and registration and processing times by souping up the software with multi-threading and batch processing and all these things to handle the data much more quickly.

We’ve also, in terms of simplicity, have added a lot of new automation tools and also improved greatly on some of our existing auto-registration techniques. We’ve streamlined them, we made the user interfaces easier. We use these new, more-powerful algorithms, so everything is faster while more heavily automated. The workflow, there’s an assistant panel and things like that to help guide the users while they’re using the product as well. As well with scale, we tried to make it similar, very simple to use; it’s a simple drag-and-drop process to bring your data in. We can handle small projects, huge projects, and we’ve done things like add new features like this concept we’ve introduced of a link.

A link is simply the connection between any two scan positions. Now, this is something that anybody doing a register understands, but it was never something that was at the forefront of the registration process. It was more of something you just kind of intuitively understand while you’re working on it. So what we’ve done is, we’ve brought that forward and made it something that is easily understood. It’s something that you can literally visualise, click on, see, to extract the information, extract the quality of that link, and understand what is happening in your registration process so that you can very quickly QA, quality check and assure what you’re doing is valid and meeting your project results. So those are some of the ways that we’ve tried to add capacity, add simplicity, add things like that to the software.

BK: Nice. That’s great. It’s really impressive so far, just to hear how this whole thing has come together and what you’ve done with it. It’s great. Now, I know the teaser campaign focused on smarter registration, visualisation, collaboration and integration. How is the new Cyclone software … How are they going to improve the way in how users capture reality in a smarter way?

JB: Right. So, as you mentioned, the teaser campaign. We really want to focus putting the customer at the very centre of their project. We think that’s really a powerful way for them to be able to handle this and process all this information. So one of the ways we’ve done that is really trying to make the customer able to accept data from anyone, from any sensor, and process that. To us, that is the definition of a smart registration. There’s no longer hurdles of bringing in disparate data sources. You can just pull it all in and run it all together.

Everyone’s time is valuable, so why should you waste it while importing data? That’s why we want to make this simplified, streamlined and incredibly quick. This way, the customer can really start to focus on their core mission and their core deliverables that they need to get out to their clients, and they don’t have to waste that time sitting and waiting for the data to import. At the end of the day, our customers’ jobs are to deliver designs to their clients or to administer their processing plants and facilities, or, in the case of public safety, to keep us all safe and enforce laws. Their job is not to process data. Their job is not to sit in front of a computer for long periods of time, have to go through extensive training to get highly specialised skills, and so that’s why we want to put the customer at the centre. Let them do their job more effectively, more efficiently, more quickly.

BK: Nice. I love that. Now, I know you mentioned earlier not having to be an expert in this and knowing the technology, also, seeing non-traditional professionals entering more and more into the realms of 3D laser scanning. So how has Cyclone’s new version adapted to allow non-professionals to deliver these results for professionals?

JB: Yeah, so Cyclone REGISTER 360 is really a perfect tool for the non-traditional users who absolutely cannot sacrifice the quality of their registration just to make it simple. Really, who can afford to do that? We can’t sacrifice quality for ease. We have to deliver both something that we rely on and that we can trust. So I think these users are going to be really impressed with Cyclone REGISTER 360.

Because of all the upgrades we’ve been making, it retains the power of the traditional Cyclone base while streamlining that experience enormously. So they can import all their data at once without having to worry about various settings for their different projects and different sensors. They have the freedom to work with the data they create, as well as assets that they create within the system of visualisations and measurements and things like that. And all these tools are really right at their disposal; they’re right at their fingertips.

They’re getting constant feedback about the quality of the registration that they’re doing, which is something that no registration software package does. You usually have to go through and do all these processes and push a button and wait for it to calculate and give you a result. We’re giving live feedback, right in the panel. You’re getting colour-coded information so that you know instantly what’s happening with every step that you take and how it’s impacting your final results. So this way, at the end of the day, once you zip through the registration process following these workflows, you can hand over to your clients something you believe in, but at the same time, we get you to the point where you actually can have professional results at the end with literally the click of a button. You can get professional-quality reporting tools and things like that so that you have these deliverables ready to go.

And I love that fact that it’s actually even integrated with some of our other tools I mentioned earlier, TruView Cloud being part of these Cyclone cloud services. It’ll be heavily integrated with that, so actually right from the product, you can publish directly to your TruView Cloud service so that the customer can instantly see it in a matter of moments. So it makes handing over tools for collaboration, delivering actual usable deliverables to the customer virtually instantaneous, which was something that was never done before.

BK: Excellent. Now, you’ve talked about how the new version’s going to empower users, enable them to work smarter, change the way they view and survey the world, as well – how is the new Cyclone software, how is it going to empower users to also offer the added value to their customers and develop new business?

JB: So I think there’s a few things that really bring value to our customers’ clients, and the first is the quality that you can trust. Across industries, everyone knows that Leica Geosystems stands for quality. When you want something done right, you trust Leica and you trust Cyclone. Now everyone can have access to that quality regardless of their experience, regardless of their expertise. The quality is made crystal clear with all the new features, both as you work with the data and once you publish it.

Our customers’ clients are going to get a really thorough report at the end of each project, and the quality is literally at the top of the page, very visual, very clear. They will know instantly whether the project is completed within their own project specs and their margin of error that they’ve specified for the work, and this way, that they know they can trust it based on that.

The report is also very easy to understand, which is another huge value add. Everyone knows at the end of the day the most valuable thing in your data is that you can validate it to anyone, anytime; and REGISTER 360 allows you to do that. The report is very visual, very intuitive way of looking at it. You don’t need to be a math major to understand the equations or look at a giant spreadsheet of error reports. It becomes a very tangible and digestible way that we now present the data. So with that, the assurance is available to anyone, and the laser scanning can, therefore, be applied to many more projects.

If there’s ever any hesitancy to adapt this technology, it’s really not that daunting anymore because of all the ease of use and what we can deliver and the fact that we can easily make it verifiable and qualified. So we want people to feel confident in their ability to work with HDS data, to work with digital reality data and take on those new types of jobs and really expand their offerings to their clients in the end.

BK: Nice, excellent. Well, Justin, thank you so much. Appreciate you sharing all this information, taking the time to be here today.
